The SVT Storybook Trail currently features The Gruffalo, the tale of a lovable monster who encounters a mouse in the woods. The pages of the book, written by Julia Donaldson and illustrated by Axel Scheffler, are posted along the 3/4-mile George Lewis Memorial Trail. You and your child can read the story in sections as you walk along the path.
Visitors of all ages now have opportunity to combine the joy of reading with a pleasant outing in the woods. The trail will feature a different book every few months, so you can enjoy a new adventure with each passing season.
Thanks to the efforts of Girl Scouts Elizabeth Ostrowski and Caitlin Myron of Sudbury, SVT now offers a Storybook Trail at Wolbach Farm (18 Wolbach Road, Sudbury).
Elizabeth and Caitlin developed the trail to earn a Girl Scout badge. They initiated the project in October 2015, when they approached SVT to discuss ideas for an outdoor project. SVT Executive Director Lisa Vernegaard suggested the Storybook Trail, and the scouts knew they had found their project.
Elizabeth and Catilin contacted Home Depot, which generously donated the building supplies. The two scouts selected and purchased the books using Girl Scout Troop funds, and they installed the posts and mounted the book pages. The trail opened in late September 2016, just in time for autumn walks in the woods.
