The Northborough Free Library was founded in 1868. Captain Cyrus Gale contributed $1000 to the start of a public library, which was housed in the town hall. The brick building in the center of town, facing Rt. 135 (South St.), is a replica of that original building.
The library outgrew its space in the former town hall. In 1894 Cyrus Gale Jr., the captain’s son, donated the land at 34 Main St. to build a separate library where it stands today. He donated $30,000 for its construction.
In 1975 the Town tripled the space of the library with an addition that cost $613,000, excluding furnishings. The Town approved plans for a further expansion at the 2000 Annual Town Meeting. The library will be accepting a $2.2 million state construction grant this year; construction should start in 2006.

Directions
The library is located at 34 Main St. (Rt. 20) in Northborough.
Access to the parking lot is via Patty Lane, a street directly across from the Exxon station in downtown Northborough. Patty Lane is a dead-end street, which opens only onto Main St. The second driveway on the left leads to the library parking lot.
From Route 290:
Take the Church St. exit for Northborough. Stay on Church St. heading to Northborough for approximately 3 miles. Church St. ends at Main St. (Rt. 20). Take a left turn at the lights; go straight through another set of lights in one block. Go over the railroad tracks and take a right at Patty Lane. Your second left brings you to the parking lot behind the library. (If you see the library on the right you have gone too far. Go around the block by taking a right turn onto School St. and try again.)
From Route 495:
Take the Rt. 20 exit heading west. Downtown Northborough is approximately 4 miles from the exit. The library will be on your left, but to get to the library parking lot use Patty Lane, which is four buildings past the library. If you get to the railroad tracks and lights in the center of town you have gone too far.
From Route 9:
Take Rt. 20 heading east until you reach the center of Northborough. There will be two sets of lights within a block; go straight through both of them, and take a right onto Patty Lane. Patty Lane brings you to the library parking lot. If you see the library on the right you have gone too far.
-OR-
Take Rt. 135 West. It ends at Rt. 20 (Main St.) in downtown Northborough. Take a right at the lights, and then take your next right onto Patty Lane, which takes you to the library parking lot. If you see the library on the right you have gone too far.
