About the Fly Fishing Courses:
Across the street from the new 23,000 squre-foot flagship store - featuring an indoor pond stocked with trout - sits the comparatively modest Orvis Fly-Fishing School. Here, from April to October, you can take a two, or a two and 1/2 day course on casting, fly selection, knot tying, stream entomology, and other requisite ingredients to get you in the water and catching fish.
On day one, you are outfitted with an Orvis graphite fly rod, reel, waders, vest, and other essential gear. Residents fly fishing gurus lead a series of lectures and videos about the Orvis Progressive Casting Method before taking everyone outside to the pond to practice what was preached.
You'll also go over basic elements including putting the od together, attaching the reel and threading the line through the leaders. After more classroom work and a catered lunch, you'll tour the store's Rod Shop to witness how the elegant tools of the trade are created. More hands-on instruction fills th afternoon, but the next morning there's a real session on the famous Battenkill River.
