Cape Ann Art Haven is a small nonprofit in downtown Gloucester with the mission of providing a place for the community to have exposure to the arts.

In the Gloucester Schools there have been many budget cuts, resulting in 'Art in A Cart' programs in many Cape Ann elementary schools.

The idea for Art Haven was first conceived by David Brooks in January 2008. Only nineteen at the time, he worked tirelessly to gain enough community support to make his vision become a reality. After working full time for six months at his day job in an effort to raise enough money to bring his idea to life, he finally saved enough and was able to find a landlord (Action Inc.) who believed in him enough to give Art Haven a chance. The doors of a newly refurbished studio on Main Street opened for classes on July 31st and the Open House later that night drew a large crowd of supporters. From that first open house until now, Art Haven has been sustained by an abundance of in-kind support from the community in addition to a couple large operational grants. Over forty businesses have donated their resources, totalling over $10,000, to help us fulfill our mission.

At Art Haven, we aim to provide opportunities for children of all ages to have a place to exercise their artistic talents. From July 2008 until May 2009 we offered afterschool classes for grades 3-8. We also host a weekly class for 15 students from an alternative high school called the Compass Youth Program, an extension of Gloucester High School for at-risk youth.

One of our most popular programs is family studio time. Family studio is a time when parents can come and participate in fun artistic projects as well as explore other mediums and interests.

In addition to our normal class programming, we love offering community events that get kids and adults excited about the arts on Cape Ann. Join us for pumpkin carving, ice sculpture building, buoy painting, and various artsy events that coincide with downtown block parties throughout the year!
