This intensive and inventive course for teen artists will include multiple building, glazing, and firing techniques to develop skills in both ceramics and sculpture making.
Over the course of two weeks, students will develop their personal artistic ideas from conception to completion using the inspiration of deCordova’s vast resources of art and artists in the Sculpture Park and Museum and the guidance of accomplished ceramic sculptor Bruce Barry.
In addition to advanced demonstrations and opportunities with throwing and building and painting and glazing, discussions will include the siting of sculpture and the special considerations of displaying ceramic works in various settings.
Structured over two weeks to allow time for bisque firing and experimentation, the six sessions offer opportunities for experiences with the following, as they relate to students’ particular interests:
finding a personal style
developing complex ceramics projects
using the electric wheel
building with slabs and coils
glazing and painting on clay
working with color
combining clay with other media
introduction to how ceramics gets fired in kilns
creating a work for a portfolio and home or other site
