Junior Crafts-at-Close-Range Workshops offers younger folks an opportunity to work with Old Sturbridge Village's seasoned craftspeople over the course of two or four weeks this winter. Areas of study include pottery, blacksmithing, knitting, and basketry.

Beginning BlacksmithingOpen to 4 participants, ages 12-16.
An introduction to the basic techniques and operations of blacksmithing through the fashioning of basic hooks and nails. The techniques to be explored include fire starting and management, and hammer control. The operations include drawing out, upsetting, chiseling, and bending. During these two Saturdays, an overview of the history of blacksmithing and iron making will be explained. Two 4-hour lessons (including a 30-minute lunch break).

March 1 and 8 (Two Saturdays, 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., with lunch from 12:00-12:30. Snow make-up date is March 15.) Deadline for registration: February 23
Members: $200, plus $10 materials fee; Non-Members: $250, plus $10 materials fee.

<>Beginning Knitting & Ladies' Parlor Arts
Open to 10 participants, ages 10 and up.
An introduction to the basic techniques of knitting through the fashioning of a pair of muffettees (early 19th-century fingerless mittens.) The first week’s lesson will include casting on, and knit and purl stitches. The following three weeks will start with an hour knitting lesson and finish with an hour lesson in ladies' skills such as cooking, games, and the decorative arts. Meet 4 weeks for a 2-hour lesson.

February 14, 21, 28, and March 6 (Four Thursdays, 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. Snow make-up date is March 13.) Deadline for registration: February 8
Members: $100, plus $10 materials fee; Non-Members: $125, plus $10 materials fee.

BasketryOpen to 5 participants, ages 11 and up.
An introduction to the basic techniques of basketry through the weaving of a basket with a handle. Learn the techniques, using modern materials, to craft a basket, including lashing, measuring, and weaving using the stop/start method. Meet 2 weeks for a 3-hour lesson.

March 1 and 8 (Two Saturdays, 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Snow make-up date is March 15.) Deadline for registration: February 25
Members: $80, plus $10 materials fee; Non-Members: $100, plus $10 materials fee.

Beginning PotteryOpen to 4 participants, ages 10 to 14.
Learn the skills of the early 19th-century potter with an experienced craftsperson. Four weeks of 5-hour lessons (including a 30-minute lunch break). Each week will involve a quick safety lesson; behind-the-scenes to discover the many period style pots in the pottery production studio; approximately two hours of wheel basics: centering, pulling, bellying, and collaring; and a new hand-building technique each week for approximately two hours to create period-related objects. Each potter will be able to choose two pieces a week to be fired in the 21st-century kiln.

February 28, March 6, 13, 20 (Four Thursdays, 9:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., with lunch from 12-12:30. Snow make-up date is March 27.) Deadline for registration: February 21
