The Vilna Ghetto Theater: Yiddish Poetry Set to Music (1941-1943)

Experience a moving concert of music from old Vilna at the historic Vilna Shul on Beacon Hill!

On Sept 6, 1941, the conquering Germans established a ghetto in Vilna, Lithuania. In January 1942, a theater opened in the Vilna Ghetto. The performances were a smashing success with the harassed ghetto inmates because for a few hours they offered the relief of laughter and tears.

Vocalist Sophie Michaux, pianist Eugenia Gerstein, and literary professor Susanne Klingenstein will present moving and witty excerpts from the four revue shows created by gifted composers and lyricists after ten-hour work days on starvation diets. The songs will be performed in Yiddish, and will be accompanied by historical information.

This concert will take place on Sunday, October 16th at 4:00 pm at the Vilna Shul, Boston’s Center for Jewish Culture, 18 Phillips Street, Boston, MA 02114. Admission is $8 for Vilna Shul members, and $10 for non-members. Bagels and beverages will be provided.
