The “Jeep” Jones Park sculpture project is called “The Value of a Life” and is a work of public art that was created to honor the life and deeds of Boston youth who have set an example for their peers by living good and decent lives in spite of many obstacles they face.
Artist Fern Cunningham’s sculpture of two children, a boy and a girl, is centered along the main walkway into the park on the Roxbury Street level. The girl holds a “Book of Hope” with an inscribed message of “Peace” from a community member to their departed child and to all who visit the park.
The young boy, his arms held high, releases a phoenix, a mythical bird that rises from ashes to live again and in some cultures is believed to be a messenger from this world to the spirit world. “Hope” takes flight triumphantly from his open hands.
