The Tradition of Tibetan Rugs
Inspiration and Creativity
An exhibit of Hand woven rugs from Tibet, courtesy of InnerAsia/Khawachen of Hanover, New Hampshire and inspired weavings by members of the Lexington Arts and Crafts Society Weavers Guild
May 18 ~ June 2, 2013
In an earlier time, beautifully crafted, vibrantly colored Tibetan rugs decorated the assembly halls and private chambers of Tibetan monasteries, aristocratic estates and homes throughout Tibet.
Rich in symbolism and meaning, even humble yak hair tents of Tibetan nomads were brightened by hand woven saddle rugs used for ponies and yaks.
In the 1980’s, the devastation of the Cultural Revolution nearly ended Tibet’s rich rug weaving tradition.
For more than 25 years, Kesang Tashi and InnerAsia/ Khawachen have worked in partnership with traditional artisans and craftsmen in Tibet to revitalize Tibet's centuries old rug weaving heritage and help new generations of craftsmen carry this tradition into the future.
A happy result of InnerAsia’s effort has been a resurgence of Tibetan rug weaving and a cross fertilization of new design ideas that connect craftsmen and weavers from Tibet with fiber artists and designers from other parts of the world.
InnerAsia’s Tibetan rugs are now created in a wide ranging and eclectic choice of contemporary and traditional designs and can be customized to meet specific design needs.
InnerAsia’s Tibetan rugs are now available in the US, Europe and Japan and are stunning examples of functional art that add beauty and meaning to homes and work spaces around the world.
The Lexington Arts and Crafts Society Weavers Guild is proud to celebrate this magnificent Tibetan art form in the upcoming Exhibit.
This Exhibit celebrates the mastery of Tibet’s rug weaving past and the vibrancy of its future.
The joint exhibit with works by members of the Guild, including a few “Tibet inspired” pieces, demonstrates , once again, that art recognizes no borders and is a connecting thread that joins us all.
