Indigenous Peoples’ Day recognizes and honors the heritage of all Indigenous peoples and the histories of their nations and communities.
Stop by the MFA for free admission and giveaways of art-making kits as well as children’s books selected by Elizabeth James-Perry (Aquinna Wampanoag) and Ekua Holmes (African American), artists, activists, and creators of “Garden for Boston,” an exhibition on the Museum’s front lawn.
Throughout the day, explore Native American art in the Art of the Americas Wing—from ancient Mississippian pottery, Mi’kmaq quillwork, and Lakota beadwork in the Native North American Art Gallery to more recent works by Maria Martinez (San Ildefonso Pueblo), Wendy Red Star (Crow), and T. C. Canon (Kiowa/Caddo).
Outside, enjoy James-Perry’s Raven Reshapes Boston: A Native Corn Garden at the MFA and Holmes’s Radiant Community—installations that have reshaped the ground around Cyrus Dallin’s Appeal to the Great Spirit sculpture with sunflowers and corn, opening new dialogues about the history of the land on which the MFA stands.
Tickets to see the special exhibition “Monet and Boston: Legacy Illuminated” on Saturday, October 9, are available for purchase starting Thursday, September 9, at 10 am.
