Three Rivers Chorus Open Rehearsal and Audition
Open rehearsals followed by auditions will be held on Mondays, September 12 and 19, 7:00-10:00p.m., at the Knights of Columbus Hall, 52 Nason Street, Maynard. All voice parts are welcome.
Founded in January 2011, the mixed voice Three Rivers Chorus champions world-class singing in service to community vitality. The group's eclectic repertoire is rooted in the classical tradition and includes masterworks, pieces by contemporary composers, world music, folk, and chant. Its singers share a solid choral background and a desire for ongoing growth as vocal artists. Drawing inspiration from the watershed ecosystem of the Sudbury, Assabet, and Concord rivers, the chorus motto is 'As the rivers are many and the water is one, so the voices are many and the singing is one.' Guest artists, improvisation, and audience participation at each concert are hallmarks of the chorus' commitment to bring diverse voices together and let loose creative energy, imagination, and hope.
Artistic Director Ellen Oak brings to Three Rivers Chorus the creative fusion of her classical training and adventurous spirit. She inspires singers and audiences to connect the beauty and power of the music with their own daily lives. A New York City native, Ellen Oak holds a master's degree in choral conducting from the Yale School of Music. Working in the Boston area for more than ten years, Oak was the founding artistic director of the KAIROS Vocal Ensemble and the Boston Women's Rainbow Chorus. She has served several area churches as minister of music; she also performs as a mezzo-soprano, composes, and teaches the interplay of worship, theology, and the arts.
The chorus rehearses in Maynard on Mondays, 7:00-9:15p.m,.mid-September through mid-June. It will present concerts in December and April, and perform at a variety of community events. This season’s repertoire includes Brasilian folksongs, vocal dances by Jasperse, Bach’s Lobet den Herrn, Gottlieb’s Presidential Suite and works by Argento, Cage, Kodaly, McFerrin, Palestrina, Pevernage, Raminsh, Rorem, Scliar, and Walker.
The audition lasts about ten minutes and explores vocal range, timbre, and technique; and pitch and rhythm recognition. The chorus seeks singers with solid choral experience who take primary responsibility for learning their part, and who desire to grow continually as vocal artists. Based on the audition, newcomers will be placed in Three Rivers Chorus, recommended for Three Rivers Bridge Chorus workshops, or offered core membership. All begin actively participating in the community life of the chorus immediately.
