Autism is a complex brain disorder that inhibits a person’s ability to communicate, process sensory information, respond to surroundings and/or form relationships with others.
Autism occurs in as many as 1 in every 150 births and in as many as 1 in every 104 boys. Approximately 67 children are diagnosed every day. An estimated 1.7 million Americans suffer from an autism spectrum disorder.
Autism costs the nation over $90 billion per year, a figure expected to double in the next decade. Most individuals with autism require lifelong supervision and care. More children will be diagnosed with autism this year than with AIDS, diabetes and cancer combined.
