Grub Street, one of the nation's largest independent writing centers, presents the 12th annual Muse and the Marketplace national literary conference designed to educate new and established writers about the craft of writing fiction and non-fiction and provide inside information about the world of publishing.
Filled with networking opportunities, the newly expanded three-day event will be held May 3-5, 2013 at the Park Plaza Hotel (50 Park Plaza, Boston Mass.) and features over 110 craft and publishing sessions led by authors, editor, agents and publicists.
In addition, the conference has secured two motivating keynote speakers: 'Muse' keynote James Wood and 'Marketplace' keynote Amanda Palmer to inspire nearly 800 writers and publishers at all stages of career development.
On all three days, prominent and nationally-recognized authors lead sessions on the craft of writing - the 'muse' side of things - while editors, literary agents, and publicists lead sessions on the business or 'marketplace' for one's work.
Here are the highlights:
On Friday May 3rd, 5-6:30 p.m., the public is invited to join attendees - at no charge - at the conference’s annual National Book Prize reading and reception with non-fiction winner Ellen Cassedy of Washington, DC, who will be reading, We Are Here: Memories of the Lithuanian Holocaust.
On Saturday May 4th at 7 p.m., “Marketplace” keynote speaker Amanda Palmer hits the stage in the wake of her recent TED talk to discuss her experience as a musician and an artist seeking to be heard; her innovative use of social media to engage with fans; and her views on connection, trust, art and today’s marketplace.
Thanks to funding by the National Endowment for the Arts as part of Grub Street’s Publish It Forward Lecture series, this keynote speech is free and open to the public; registration in advance is required by visiting grubstreet.org.
On Sunday May 5th at 12:45 p.m., “Muse” keynote speaker James Wood, addresses attendees.
Wood is a literary critic, essayist, and novelist as well as professor of the Practice of Literary Criticism at Harvard University and staff writer at The New Yorker.
This year's conference ticket gives attendees a choice of 3, 4, 8 or 11 sessions from 110 offerings over the full weekend, with information available for preview at www.grubstreet.org.
Guests can peruse in advance and plan their experience over one, two or all three days.
With over 100 presenters plus testimonials and even time for socializing and networking, there is something for everyone at this year’s conference.
For an additional fee, the conference’s Manuscript Mart allows attendees to meet one-on-one with an established literary agent or editor who has read their work in advance, and provides direct feedback.
