When Ruth Cope’s thirty-eight-year-old son was diagnosed with Acute Myelogenous Leukemia, she dropped everything to care for him.
A widow and a psycho-oncology researcher just then finishing a study of the experiences of caregivers of terminally ill adult cancer patients, she herself became a caregiver once again.
Losing Larry describes the relationship that developed between mother and son at a time when, under normal circumstances, they would have been moving apart, each of them into their independent lives.
While Larry’s journey ended in a sudden relapse, Ruth turned to her faith and, in time, initiated work for caregivers to talk about their experiences, appreciate their work and learn from one another.
Understanding that people respond to loss and grief in their own singular ways, she offers this memoir, personal and reflective, not as a guide, but as a companion to readers who may be on their own path, caring for loved ones and dealing with serious illness and loss.
This session is presented by the Temple Emanuel Death Café initiative.
