The Town of Brookline’s annual 1st- Light Festival kicks off the holiday season, offering FREE events scheduled in Brookline Village, Coolidge Corner, Washington Square, St. Mary’s Station, JFK Crossing and Putterham Circle.

1st Light Festival has been enjoyed by community members of all ages, business owners and performers for over ten years. This year participants can enjoy the return of live music and dance performances, as well as food sampling, and the ever popular costume characters (Clifford, Sponge Bob, Hello Kitty, Shrek and more) at more than 100 activity locations throughout Brookline. New events and landmarks include a scavenger hunt for participants in Coolidge Corner and Brookline Village, a 1st Light Art Gallery with local artists displaying origin al works, and six light sculptures throughout the town.

Six artists have lit up the commercial areas of Brookline with their creative spirit. Using light as a symbol of hope and spirit during the long winter months, the artists have created temporary outdoor illuminated installations. The range of materials and ideas is wide addressing issues such as the environment, forgotten spaces, architecture, history, and memory.

Despite the differences, each artist, has created a sculpture that will light up the eyes of viewers and illuminate the space around it. The sculptures will be lit for the duration of the 1st Light Festival in the following locations: Brookline Village, “Skyscape” by Artist: Joan Schwartz, at the intersection of Washington and Harvard St by the clock. Coolidge Corner, “Lustre Cluster” by Artist: Dana Filibert, at the intersection of Beacon and Webster St. Coolidge Corner, “Gothic Renewal” by Artists: Meg Bye and Andrew Coon, at 279 Harvard St Alleyway. Putterham Circle by Artist: Katrina Majkut, at the Putterham Circle Sign. St Mary’s Station, by Artist, Amy Beth Harrison, at Monmouth Park in front of Brookline Arts Center. Washington Square by Artist: Katrina Majkut, at the Clock, intersection of Beacon and Washington .
