Choreography: For this production Dance Prism's Miranda Bailey has distilled the four acts of Tchaikovsky’s magnificent Swan Lake score into a one act “white swan” ballet, focusing on the ethereal beauty of the Swan Maidens and the timeless struggle of pure love against the overwhelming power of evil. Bailey, a soloist with Columbia City Ballet, has split her focus between South Carolina and Massachusetts to complete setting the work on the company’s dancers. In contrast Stravinski’s more earthy ballet, The Firebird, adapted from the original ground breaking work, is derived from ancient Russian myths of a magically radiant bird and an omnipotent wizard. The choreography balances the gentle beauty of captive princesses with the primitive energy of hordes of demonic creatures. Black Swan, Bluebird, and Songbird Variations complete the program.
Complementary Reception: Children and adults are invited to meet the Swan Queen, the Firebird, and other dancers at a complementary reception in the theatre lobby, following the performance.
