Swan Lake Ballet Performed by Dance Prism
Performances will be offered at the Performing Arts Center in Littleton at 2:30 pm on Sunday, October 27, and at Andover’s Collins Center at 2:30 on Sunday, November 3.
Swan Lake, with its fascinating story line of a Prince, a Swan Queen and an evil Magician, features the ethereal beauty of the Swan Maidens and explores the timeless struggle of pure love pitted against the overwhelming power of evil in the person of the sorcerer Von Rothbart.
Miranda Bailey and Artistic Director Mary Demaso have set the work on the Dance Prism troupe staying true to traditional classic staging.
Bailey is a recent former soloist with Columbia City Ballet, Columbia, South Carolina where she performed for twelve years.
The dancers performing in Swan Lake have assembled from far and near.
Miranda Bailey, who has returned to Maynard from South Carolina, will dance the dual roles of Odette, a princess trapped in the body of an innocent white swan, and Odile the malevolent Black Swan, the villain Von Rothbart's daughter.
The role of Prince Siegfried, reluctant heir to the throne, will be performed by John-Michael Takashima of Orlando, FL.
Von Rothbart, the evil magician will be Jonathan Towle of Hudson; Matthew Tucker of Marlborough will play Benno, Prince Siegfried’s closest friend; and Katherine Klinger of Sudbury will appear as Siegfried’s mother, the Queen.
Other company members dancing in the production hail from several New England States and as far away as Phoenix, AZ.
Set to the memorable music of Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky, Swan Lake is a tale of love, betrayal and redemption.
The ballet tells the story of Odette, a beautiful princess turned into a swan by the curse of an evil sorcerer whose spell can only be broken if a prince swears his love to her.
If Odette is betrayed, she will remain a swan forever.
Since its première in 1895, Swan Lake has become one of the most popular dance dramas of all time, performed throughout the world, and considered by many to be the greatest of classical ballets.
Full of mystery and romance, the ballet captures the imagination and inspires audiences of all ages.
Young audience members beguiled by its images of princes and pointe shoes and tutus are invited to meet the Swan Queen and other dancers at a complementary reception following the performance.
Dance Prism New England was founded in 1982 by Scott Ranagan and Mary Demaso.
The company is a classically focused ensemble distinguished both for its treatment of such narrative ballets as The Nutcracker, Don Quixote, and Giselle, and for its original neoclassical works.
A touring company serving the New England region, Dance Prism is committed to making the spectrum of ballet truly accessible and affordable to area communities.
Dance Prism's Massachusetts touring schedule regularly includes appearances in such venues as Worcester's Mechanics Hall, the Collins Center in Andover, and the Jackson Arts Center at Bristol Community College in Fall River.
