Two Maynard businesses, Dunia, The Earth-Friendly Store for Home, Body and Soul(SM), and CD Willy’s New and Used Compact Discs, are sponsoring 'Remake/Reformat,' a recycled CD art competition, as a way to raise awareness of the growing problem of discarded discs and to inspire creative, outside-the-box uses for them. A portion of the proceeds from the sale of these artworks will be donated to The Center for Ecological Technology (www.cetonline.org), a Massachusetts-based nonprofit organization the provides tools for living in a more environmentally sound manner.

'It kills me to say this,' laments Will Kracke of CD Willy's, 'But in my business, I see tons of discs that, for one reason or another, people trash.' According to the independent research organization Worldwatch Institute (www.worldwatch.org), more than 45 tons of CDs become obsolete – outdated, useless or unwanted – every month around the world. CD Willy's will make its obsolete discs available for artists to use for the exhibit. 'Will this event force people to rethink how they use discs?' continued Kracke. 'Maybe. Whatever happens, though, we’re going to have some fun with it.'

Submissions of artwork will be accepted through May 31st; finalists will go on exhibit at both stores from August 7th through September 22nd, and prizes in each of three categories – middle school, high school and adult – will be awarded on Sunday, August 19th.
