A writer-photographer, Aigner was active in French photojournalism in the 1930s and one of the early users of the small Leica camera to cover news events before moving to the United States in 1939. He eventually made his home in Great Barrington, Massachusetts. Aigner’s work is included in the permanent collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art; the Museum of Modern Art; The International Center for Photography; the George Eastman House; the Polaroid Collection; and The French National Library among many others. The New York Times called him, “The Master of the Picture Story.”
Aigner’s exhibit at The Pinehills will feature more than 50 of his thousands of photographs. Some standouts include:
Albert Einstein at Princeton – Possibly Aigner’s most famous work, this group of photos features one of Einstein standing in baggy pants with a blackboard behind him. Einstein had called this photo his favorite of all time.
Mussolini at Stressa – Aigner captured the Italian dictator holding his nose and this unique photo became a cover of Newsweek Magazine.
Marlene with Family – Aigner shot Marlene Dietrich during a quiet lunch with her family at a restaurant in Paris. The femme fatale looks relaxed and pleased to be away from the Hollywood scene.
Limited gallery-quality prints will be available for purchase.
The exhibit will be open Saturdays and Sundays in the month of June (beginning June 13th) starting at 11am. Special viewings available by calling 617-254-9500. For more gallery information, call The Pinehills 508-209-2000.
