An animist sensibility pervades Carol Dearborn's art; every entity - animal, vegetable, or mineral - teems with energy and mystery. Her Mountain Goddess krohn (2005) depicts in the foreground a one-eyed, vaguely aboriginal, phantasm; a mountain peak rises in the haze behind. Even her more literal landscape paintings animate the inanimate. The way Dearborn tilts the gnarled, weathered subject of her Cherry Tree in Winter (2009) imparts motion, inducing a slight vertigo in the viewer.
The tree's dark shadows contrast starkly, almost menacingly against the otherwise bright palette. Dearborn takes a different compositional approach in Thoughts of Jinx (2009), in which an imposing spiral - part snails's shell, part cloud formation - hovers mysteriously over a distant snowy evergreen valley. Does primordial energy arise from somewhere below us, within us, or from the vast cosmos? Dearborn's imagery persists in the mind like a good Zen koan.
Formally educated in fine art and philosophy, Carol Dearborn is a third-generation artist from a family with a tradition of art for social action. In addition to her landscapes in various mediums, Dearborn has for many years used series of semi-abstract and symbolist paintings for energetic healing and transformation. She is also a portraitist in oil and pastel, working on commission and offering classes in portraiture as well as workshops in collage and other creative forms.
Dunia is located at 43 Nason Street in downtown Maynard. 'Visual Conversations' artwork will be available for viewing during store hours, Monday through Saturday from 10 AM to 6 PM.
