Future Retro: American Auto Design 1940 - 1960's
Venue: | Museum of Fine Arts, Boston (MFA) |
Cost: | $$ see below |
Category: | Exhibits |
Drawn entirely from the collection of Jean S. and Frederic A. Sharf, this installation of approximately thirty objects includes 28 drawings from the 1940s through the 1960s as well as two painted wood car models from the mid-fifties. Selections from the Jean S. and Frederic A. Sharf Collection have been designated as promised gifts to the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. Future Retro has been organized as a complementary installation to Speed, Style, and Beauty: Cars from the Ralph Lauren Collection on view in the Gund Gallery through July 3, 2005.
Along with the installation, the MFA has produced a book entitled Future Retro featuring over 50 color illustrations — many never before published — as well as text that discusses the role of the designer, the influence of emerging technologies, and the ways in which these illustrations depict a particularly resonant segment of the American dream.

Renderings of Future Car Design
Excellent. Exhibit should have been promoted at the entrance to the museum. My wife and I stumbled on it accidentially.
I related to these drawings as I was a senior auto stylist with GM during this period; and I worked with 2 of the artists featured.
