Freedom Riders Events in Cambridge
On December 4, 2011 at 2pm at the Main Branch of the Cambridge Public Library, 499 Broadway, Cambridge, we will show in its entirety, the documentary “Freedom Riders,” the powerful harrowing and ultimately inspirational story of six months in 1961 that changed America forever. This Emmy Award winning documentary examines the movement from many perspectives - that of the Riders, the Kennedy administration and the international community.
In conjunction with the screening, we will open the doors to the Freedom Riders Traveling Exhibition on December 10, 2011 at 4pm. Created in partnership with the PBS series American Experience, this exhibition combines photography, news coverage and first-hand audio accounts, to tell the story of this dangerous experiment in the fight for Civil Rights. The exhibit will be on display December 10 through December 30 at the Mayor Sheila Doyle Russell Youth and Community Center, 680 Huron Ave, Cambridge, Ma.
On December 18, at 2pm, we will host a Panel Discussion at the Cambridge Public Library Main Branch. We hope to engage the public in a discussion with former Freedom Riders and key orchestrators of the civil rights movement and those who have been impacted by it. We are also planning a Youth Panel to take place in December.
