On display are stamps from many different countries that feature all the events from archery to wrestling and badminton to weightlifting. See stamps issued at the famous 1936 Berlin Olympics as well as a set of Australian stamps that feature all that nation's gold medal winners from the 2008 Beijing Olympics.
Also on display is a sheet of U.S. stamps issued in 1996 in Atlanta that has the autographs of eleven past Olympians (from 1936 to 2008) who visited the Museum four years ago.
In addition to showing the various sports, stamps that feature the Olympic flag and torch, Baron Pierre LeCoubertin, the founder of the modern Olympics, and envelopes issued on the first day of the contests from such venues as London in 1948, Mexico City in 1968 and Munich in 1972 are exhibited.
Besides the Olympics stamps, the Museum also has on view letters, envelopes and stamps from the American Civil War, envelopes flown on various Zeppelin flights across the Atlantic and North Pole, stamps related to the 60th anniversary of Queen Elizabeth's reign and non-stamp items showing a history of postal delivery in the United States as well as early children's postal games.
The Museum has stamp hunts for the children about the games with Olympic stamps as prizes plus plenty of Olympic stamps for sale in the Museum's gift shop. The Museum is also an official U.S. Post Office and sells all current U.S. stamps including the recent Ted Williams commemorative .
The Olympic exhibit will run through the last weekend in September. Summer hours are Thursdays to Saturdays, noon to 5. The Museum reopens on Sundays after Labor Day. A stamp show is being held on Sunday, August 12 from 10:00 to 3:00 with free Museum admission. The Museum is air-conditioned, has free wi-fi and free parking.
