The Gallery at Dunia, The Earth-Friendly Store for Home, Body and Soul(SM) will feature 'Inner Deities,' an exhibit of Mandala art by Boxborough artist Chris Flisher, from February 6th through April 6th. The pieces on display will include some new works from Flisher, whose ornate images pay homage to centuries-old Hindu and Buddhist motifs even as they draw meaning from our Internet-era, postmodernist culture.

The gallery will host a reception for Chris Flisher on Sunday, February 18th, from 2 to 5 P.M. The public is invited to attend. The artist will donate 20% of the proceeds from the sale of his mandala art to The Peter Black Neurological Fund at Brigham and Women’s Hospital (www.boston-neurosurg.org/blacklab/blackfund.html), a fund established to help perpetuate scientific advances in neurosurgery and the training of young physicians.

Flisher’s mandala creations draw liberally from the Dharmic Hindu and Buddhist traditions, most featuring the symmetry, fastidious detail, and the archetypal circular composition (mandala means “circle” or “completion” in Sanskrit). But while Flisher honors the Dharma, he eschews the dogma; pop-culture references—from Miles Davis and Marvin Gaye to compact discs and Cirque de Soleil—radiate from his creations like the arms of the Goddess Shiva. Nevertheless, gazing into the heart of one of these visual labyrinths generates a solitary peace, transcending the multicultural threads that go into the art.
'Mandalas represent wholeness,' muses Flisher, 'the connectedness of all things. Mine tend to connect the familiar with the invisible, or even the subconscious.'

Flisher’s mandala art is merely one of his many recent creative endeavors. Flisher is also an astrologer, the host of several radio shows, a journalist and contributor to many magazines, and the subject of the bizarre social experiment that was the Fox reality show, Trading Spouses. He currently lives, dreams, works, creates and plays with his three children in the Town of Boxborough.

Dunia is located at 43 Nason Street in downtown Maynard. 'Inner Deities' will be available for viewing during store hours, Tuesday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., except for Thursday, when the store stays open until 8 p.m.
