Heaven and Earth
Nineteenth-century artists often depicted a nature either harmoniously idyllic or terrifyingly awesome—sometimes both at once.
While many of the works in this exhibition present the landscape as a kind of fantasy, others explore the ways in which artists—both past and present—have expressed their wonder at nature’s invisible or intangible properties, as well as exercised their imaginations to depict the unknown.
