In Fall of 2005, while volunteering at a nearby orphanage, Karen Sparacio accepted an invitation to visit a community of refugees in a hardscrabble area of Central Uganda’s Acholi Quarter. So transformed was she by this experience that Sparacio took up residence with them, and vowed to devote her time and energy to improving their lot.

As part of this mission, the Malden-based photographer will exhibit Loka: Land Beyond the River, a collection of photographs of her adopted family at The Gallery at Dunia, The Earth-Friendly Store for Home, Body and Soul(SM) from April 17th through June 9th.

The Gallery will host a reception for Karen Sparacio on Sunday, April 29th, from 2 to 5 P.M.; the public is invited to attend. Sparacio will donate 100% of the proceeds from the sale of her photographs to Project Have Hope (www.projecthavehope.org), the non-profit entity she founded to improve the lives and living conditions of this community.

An accomplished photojournalist and graduate of Rutgers College and the New England School of Photography, Sparacio has since returned to the refugee camp numerous times. Bright and joyful, the photographs give testament to the courage of the people who have adopted Sparacio. Children – sun-drenched and sprightly, playing, doing chores, working in the nearby quarry, improvising toy cameras out of pieces of brick, seemingly oblivious to their bleak circumstances – figure prominently in Sparacio’s photographs. Then there is her use of color. From the warm-toned mud and clay surroundings to the vibrant fabrics hanging on a clothesline, Sparacio’s brilliant photographs attest to the undying optimism of this small community, and reaffirm our own hope against near-insurmountable odds.

“An Acholi woman named Grace first brought me to the quarter,” said Sparacio. “Since that first visit, back in October of 2005, my life has taken on a very different direction.”

Dunia is located at 43 Nason Street in downtown Maynard. Karen Sparacio’s photography will be available for viewing during store hours, Tuesday through Saturday from 10 A.M. to 6 P.M., except for Thursday, when the store stays open until 8 P.M.
