A funny thing happened when two Maynard merchants – Dunia, The Earth-Friendly Store for Home, Body and Soul(SM), and CD Willy’s New and Used Compact Discs – organized a statewide recycled-disk art competition: only 26 artists entered. More interesting still: all 26 are students of Maynard High School Art Teacher John Flynn.

The exhibit, “Remake/Reformat: Recycled Disk Art,” runs from August 7th through September 22nd at the two stores, and a reception and award ceremony will take place on Sunday, August 19th, from 2 to 5 PM. A portion of the proceeds from the sale of these artworks will be donated to the Massachusetts-based Center for Ecological Technology (www.cetonline.org), a nonprofit that provides tools for environmentally sound living.

The owners of Dunia and CD Willy’s saw the juried exhibit as a way to raise awareness of the growing problem of discarded disks. After a bit of fretting and soul-searching, the two stores’ managers decided to embrace the local, and to pick their winners from among these entries.
