By planting pop-culture iconography into broad washes of color and abstract patterns, Weisner throws contemporary themes into the light of 1920s abstract expressionism. Starkly beautiful and structurally sparing, Weisner's canvases haunt the psyche with their wry social commentary and lurking, archetypal bogeymen.

'Synaesthesia' runs from January 29 through April 19. A reception will be held for the artist on Sunday, February 10, from 2 to 5 PM; the public is invited and attendance is free. Fifteen percent of the proceeds from the sale of Weisner's art will benefit North Shore Animal League (www.nsalamerica.org), the largest no-kill animal rescue and adoption organization in the world.

Weisner works with acrylics, oils, brushes, spray paints, pencil, pen-and-ink, and collage. In many works, foregrounds and backgrounds shift unsettlingly, as deep hues - cobalt, ochre, and charcoal - oscillate against pastels. In 'Man Stands' (2007), a lattice grid - possibly a high-rise office building - and a silhouetted figure, menacing in a fedora and suit, are separated by a rectangular red field that seems to float off the canvas. 'Kate Moss' (2006) depicts the supermodel posterized, Warhol-like, familiar yet alarming, defaced with apparent blood streaming from one nostril. In 'Basketball' (2003), a stenciled athlete might be a coach's playbook illustration or a police chalk outline, a diagonal streak piercing his head and left shoulder. Rich in references to Hollywood and Madison Avenue, Weisner's world is layered and ominous.

'My goal is to create images that confront and conflict with the ordinary,' said Weisner, 'I am influenced by the seasons, electricity, sound.' Weisner studied at Colby Sawyer College and Fitchburg Art Museum School. He has exhibited his art at Continental Cafe‚ in Acton and at Fitchburg Art Museum's 72nd regional exhibition of art and craft.

Dunia is located at 43 Nason Street in downtown Maynard. Dan Weisner's 'Synaesthesia' artwork will be available for viewing during store hours, Monday through Saturday from 10 AM to 6 PM, except for Thursday, when the store stays open until 8 PM.
