Harvest festival for Cambridge Schools’ unique school garden program
Decorate pumpkins, press apple cider, and make delicious food. Discover the wonders of your local school garden led by students. Learn how Cambridge Public Schools students plant and harvest their bounties from their urban gardens. Enjoy all of these fun activities at the annual CitySprouts School Garden Celebration on Saturday, October 2nd from 11am until 3pm.
Hands-on crafts and harvest food will be available for sale—all proceeds benefit the city’s 12 school gardens. Visitors can also learn more about CitySprouts, a school garden program that bridges children’s learning time in school with out-of-school activities. CitySprouts gardens are on-site at each of the city’s 12 K-8 public schools. Over the summer, Green Teams of middle schoolers from each school learn how to grow and cook food from the school garden. The festival will be hosted this year, rain or shine, by the Tobin School, 197 Vassal Lane, Cambridge, MA. Admission is free.
“Our garden is at the center of all of the work that we do here at the Tobin. We are delighted to share our experiences with families from across the Cambridge community, from our study of cider pressing to our sketches of plantings,” says Tobin School Principal Seth Lewis Levin. “City Sprouts has been equally instrumental in teaching our new students from other countries as it has been to the implementation of the ideas of Maria Montessori.”
