Brookline’s 300th Anniversary Event will showcase the history and legacy of the community through live entertainment, fireworks (the first display in 60 years) and art exhibitions all held at Larz Anderson Park located at 15 Newton Street in Brookline.
Activity Schedule
A host of activities will take place in the park from 1:00pm - 6:00pm, including:
• Live Entertainment featuring musical groups, cultural performances, puppet shows, and comedy troupes – entertainment for the entire family!
• Historical Performances featuring reenactments of Frederick Douglass, Sojourner Truth, and Isabel Anderson, and stories about the Underground Railroad and local Holocaust survivors and WWII Veterans.
• Cultural Highlights showcasing the premiere of The Brookline 300 documentary by resident Al Davis, the Brookline 300 Anniversary cake display by Newbury College, the Senior Center Brookline 300 Anniversary Quilt, the Brookline Arts Center mural exhibit, the Art Barn 300 Faces display and artwork by public school students.
• See the Stars! Visitors can look through a powerful research-grade telescope at the world-renowned Clay Center Observatory and be dazzled by 300 commemorative lanterns as they are launched into the Larz Anderson Lagoon.
• A Finale of Fireworks, Brookline’s first in 60 years, will light up the evening sky at 6:20 p.m.

About the Town of Brookline
Brookline has a rich history. In 1705, when the town was incorporated, there were approximately 300 local residents. Today, more than 57,000 people reside in Brookline. Incorporated primarily a farming community, Brookline has since been home to a number of famous residents in a variety of industries including Zabdiel Boylston, a physician who introduced inoculation against smallpox to the North American colonies in 1721, Henry Varnum Poor, creator of the Standard and Poor Index and King Gillette, inventor of the safety razor. Conan O’Brien, Mike Wallace, Barbara Walters and Theo Epstein were all Brookline residents.

- Clara Blanton, founder of The American Red Cross was from Brookline.
- There were two stops of the Underground Railroad in Brookline - 9 Toxtech Street and 182 Walnut Street.
- In 1730, the famous Punch Bowl Tavern was built by John Ellis, located on Washington Street.
- Twice in its history, in 1873 and 1880, the City of Boston attempted to seize Brookline . . . and failed!
