Each visitor will also receive a strand of colorful Mardi Gras beads to wear and take home. Thanks to underwriting by TD Banknorth, all performances and activities are included with paid admission to the museum, and as always, free for museum members.
Jimmy Jo and the Jumbol’ayuhs, a colorful trio hailing from the “bayous” of coastal Maine, will perform half-hour sets at 11 AM, 1 PM, and 3 PM on the museum’s second floor. Based in Phippsburg, the Jumbol'ayuhs serve up music from Cajun Louisiana with a Downeast accent. Featuring Pam Weeks on lead fiddle and vocals, Bill Olson on guitar, and Kit Garavoy on percussion, the Jumbol'ayuhs play lively two-steps and waltzes that get audiences across Northern New England clapping and dancing.
To give the celebration a truly authentic flavor, visitors are invited to get a taste of New Orleans with hot, homemade jambalaya, served up with tangy lemon bread generously provided by Seacoast specialty food purveyor The Lollipop Tree.
Museum admission is $6 per person, $5 for seniors, and free for members and children under one. For more information on the Mardi Gras celebration or the Children's Museum, please call (603) 436-3853 or visit www.childrens-museum.org.
The Children’s Museum of Portsmouth is the state’s most visited cultural attraction for families welcoming more than 97,000 visitors a year. The museum offers a range of informal learning opportunities in the areas of science, art, music, math, and more. Most of the museum’s exhibits have been designed and created by the staff in conjunction with local artisans, and all are based on important developmental and educational principles. In addition to its on-site programming, the 'Museum To You' program has brought free, interactive exhibits to 13 of New Hampshire's most under-served communities. This year, the NH Department of Education has chosen The Children's Museum to lead its 21st Century Learner Program in Berlin and Gorham.
