Rescue Me: Fighting Fire in America
Thompson Gallery

Open June 6 – September 22, 2008

Experience what it’s like to be a firefighter today and learn about the progress made over the last three hundred years through historic and contemporary equipment, artifacts, apparel and hands-on activities.

Feel the weight of a firefighter’s uniform, time yourself as you hook up a fire hose and travel through an obstacle course to perform a rescue. Investigate how America’s great fires and advances in technology led to fire prevention, improvements in building construction and the changing role of today’s fire departments. Uncover the history behind brotherhood traditions of bagpipes and Dalmatians, and read the stories of today’s heroes.

Fire buffs of all ages will enjoy a fun day celebrating the traditions of firefighting at a Rescue Roundup scheduled for Saturday, June 28, 4-8pm. Inspect antique fire engines from North Shore collectors, climb aboard Wenham’s fire and rescue vehicles, play water races and end the day with an ice-cream sundae. The museum will extend visiting hours for all to visit the museum’s special exhibition.
