Set in the small eastern European village of Anatevka, this musical follows a Jewish family through the struggles of oppression during the early part of the twentieth century. Tevye, a poor dairyman, and his wife Golde, strive to raise five girls traditionally in an ever-changing Russian society. As his three oldest daughters mature and marry, Tevye is forced to respond and adjust to extreme challenges to his long-held values.
A positive message prevails, however, as Tevye and the citizens of Anatevka choose to embrace their difficult conditions and live life to the fullest. To the accompaniment of a stirring musical score, many moments of profound pride and joy occur, even as Tevye and the people of Anatevka acknowledge that their future is as precarious as a “fiddler on a roof”.
