Family ties, religious customs, political unrest and love: Watertown Children’s Theatre and its talented young cast of 90 tackle some hefty themes while rehearsing for their upcoming production of the Broadway favorite, Fiddler on the Roof.

Set in the small eastern European village of Anatevka, this musical follows a Jewish family through the struggles of oppression during the early part of the twentieth century. Tevye, a poor dairyman, and his wife Golde, strive to raise five girls traditionally in an ever-changing Russian society. As his three oldest daughters mature and marry, Tevye is forced to respond and adjust to extreme challenges to his long-held values.

A positive message prevails, however, as Tevye and the citizens of Anatevka choose to embrace their difficult conditions and live life to the fullest. To the accompaniment of a stirring musical score, many moments of profound pride and joy occur, even as Tevye and the people of Anatevka acknowledge that their future is as precarious as a “fiddler on a roof”.
