Before Jake Gyllenhaal was in every movie made in the U.S., he was a young actor whose first big break was in this inspirational drama. It is about a high school student from the depressed mining town of Coalwood, West Virginia who reaches for the stars by buidling and launching a rocket of his own design.
Set against the backdrop of the tense, early days of The Cold War when the Soviet Union had just launched their Sputnik satellite into orbit, the film is a real-life account, based on the book Rocket Boys: A Memoir by NASA rocket scientist Homer Hickam.
