Eleanor’s Secret (2009), from Academy Award nominated director Dominique Monféry, is a sumptuously animated movie about a magic library where all the characters from classic children’s books come alive.
Nat has fond memories of his eccentric Aunt Eleanor reading to him from her enormous collection of storybooks but is frustrated by his inability to read the books himself.
But he soon discovers that the library is magical – the books are all original first editions of history’s most popular fairy tales, and the famous characters come to life!
Now with the help of Alice in Wonderland, the Ogre, Peter Pan and others, he must find a way to get back the books and learn to read an ancient spell to keep the characters alive for future generations of children.
Eleanor’s Secret plays at 4:30pm on Friday, November 2nd and 7:30pm on Saturday, November 3rd. This film is not rated and is recommended for ages 5 and up.
The Pagemaster (1994) stars Macauley Culkin as Richard Tyler, a shy boy who loves to read. When he takes shelter from a storm in his local library, he is magically swept away to an animated world of make-believe full of adventure, fantasy, and horror.
Joining a wise-cracking band of literary characters, Richard searches for the mysterious Pagemaster… and a way home. Christopher Lloyd and Whoopi Goldberg co-star in this lushly realized blend of live action and hand-drawn animation.
First released in 1994, director Joe Johnston gives us a gleeful and gentle look at this coming-of-age story. The Pagemaster plays at 7:30pm on Friday, November 2nd and 5:30pm on Saturday, November 3rd. This film is rated G and is recommended for ages 5 and up.
Proceeds from the Boston Animation Festival will be donated to Jumpstart Northeast, the Boston-based branch of the national early education nonprofit that works to prepare children for school with language and literacy skills.
