Belmont World Film, which has presented the best in international films from around the globe for children and adults since 2001, will hold a “Full Moon Festival” for families on the day of January’s full moon, Saturday, January 26, at the Studio Cinema in Belmont (376 Trapelo Road).

The festival features the screening of two films about the moon featuring half-moon cookies for all--Lotte and the Moonstone Secret at 10:30 AM and Moon Man at 1:00 PM, which will be followed by a discussion of the phases of the moon led by an astronomer.

Lotte and the Moonstone Secret is a beautifully drawn animated film that is part of a series created by animators in Estonia and Latvia.

The film features a very inventive cartoon dog named Lotte, the Mickey Mouse of Estonia.

In the film Lotte looks up at the moon and wonders who might live there.

When she and her Uncle Klaus go in search of three mysterious “moon” stones with special powers, she experiences a wide variety of fascinating and highly imaginative encounters, encouraging flexibility, exploration, and adventure, as well as wonder, curiosity, and eagerness to learn about other kinds of people and places.

The film takes place in a friendly world that is free of violence and is suitable for children 3-8.

Adapted from the worldwide best-selling children’s book written and illustrated by Tomi Ungerer in 1967 at the height of the space race, Moon Man examines themes of loneliness, difference, understanding and acceptance.

It tells the story of how the man in the moon, bored of sitting in his silvery cage all the time, hitches a ride to earth on a shooting star.

In order to stay one step ahead of earth’s evil president, he goes on a long journey, marveling at the many wonders the earth has to offer and realizing just how much children love and need him.

The directorial debut of Stephen Schesch, who previously produced the film version of Ungerer’s The Three Robbers, also features the artistic efforts of Cartoon Saloon, the Ireland-based animation studio responsible for the Oscar-nominated Secret of Kells.

It is recommended for children ages 7 and up.
