The Boston Jewish Film Festival: Abulele Film Screening
Throughout the year, the Festival engages and inspires the community to explore the full spectrum of Jewish life, values and culture.
Our History
The Boston Jewish Film Festival was founded in 1989 by filmmaker Michal Goldman.
Today, the Festival is become a destination for the community to get together and talk about international award-winning films on Jewish topics and themes.
As the Festival continues to grow (from just 10 screenings in its first year to over 60 in recent editions), the BJFF has welcomed 300,000 audience members.
Films that have had premieres at the BJFF include Academy Award-winners such as The Pianist (2002), Nowhere in Africa (2002), and Son of Saul (2015).
The Festival has grown to include a variety of arts – from musical accompaniment and performances to dance.
The Festival also prides itself on in-depth post-screening conversations with filmmakers and other special guests from around the world.
The Festival has also expanded its programming to screenings throughout the year, presenting previews of Jewish films before major releases and special screenings.
In 2011 the Boston Jewish Film Festival became the host for ReelAbilities Boston, Boston’s disabilities film festival.
Like the BJFF, ReelAbilities uses film to bring together a community to increase awareness and understanding.
In 2007, departing Artistic Director Kaj Wilson was honored for her work by a commendation from the Boston Society of Film Critics.
In 2009, the Festival received the “Cat’s Meow” award from the Chlotrudis Society for Independent Film.
The award noted that The Boston Jewish Film Festival is, “not just a great Boston film event, it’s a great champion and friend to all Boston things film related, and we think it’s the cat’s meow.”
