World's Largest Key Lime Pie at South Station
Afternoon commuters can get a taste of the Florida Keys Thursday, Feb. 5, when the world's largest Key lime pie is to be prepared at Boston's South Station, 700 Atlantic Ave.
The gigantic pie, expected to measure 9 feet in diameter, is to be created by Key West chef David Sloan, author of 'The Ultimate Key Lime Pie Cookbook,' and another fellow Key West chef.
It is to be prepared in the main concourse of the station and should yield almost 2,000 servings. The pie's ingredients include the juice of 5,760 tiny yellow Key limes, 200 pounds of graham crackers and 55 gallons of sweetened condensed milk.
The pie is estimated to weigh 1,000 pounds. Believed to have originated in Key West in the late 1800s, Key lime pie was designated Florida's official pie in 2006 by the state legislature. The pie is to be served beginning at 4 p.m. The chefs will begin creating the pie around 3:15 p.m.
