Progress Educational Services International (PESI) is a start-up partnership between volunteers here in Boston, volunteers from the Ethiopian diaspora community in the Metro DC region, and volunteers and a small staff in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

Engaging disconnected youth everywhere is important, especially in countries like Ethiopia with one of the largest youth populations in sub-Saharan Africa. Only 1 in 20 Ethiopians continues formal education past 10th grade. More than 75% of Ethiopian youth have never even been to school.

To date, we have rented a mini-campus in a low-income neighborhood, or kebelle, in Addis Ababa, and will create a practice farm there. We have also contracted with local agricultural experts to develop a curriculum that will focus on expertise (in urban agriculture), entrepreneurship, and employability.

The aim is to provide a stepping stone for young women and men who are talented and hard-working but have had the opportunity for only limited education.

Below is more information on the program model. On June 24, speakers will include a local student intern from The Food Project talking about the impact of her experience working in urban agriculture.

All of our board members have generously contributed time and money, but we are holding this fundraising dinner to introduce you to our project and to raise the funds needed to complete the practice farm and kick off our first program this summer.

Our dollars go a long way in Ethiopia! A contribution of $250 is enough for a fully equipped new chicken coop, while $100 covers new tools and books for one future farmer. And $50, the cost of dinner for one guest, is enough for seeds and soil for one garden bed...

More about the Urban Training Farm
The impact we are aiming for with our first cohort of participants, set to begin the program this summer, will be to prepare them to start their own urban farm enterprise, find employment in agriculture, or find employment in some other sector. For this reason we will have classroom and hands-on instruction in not only horticulture, mushroom growing and poultry raising, but also in business planning, financial management, soft skills for the workplace, resume writing, and more. Any of these three avenues will lead to increased household income while two will lead to increased local food security as well.

We are very excited about launching this urban training farm in Addis Ababa, but also have a longer term vision for our model in other industries and in other countries. It follows some of the best practices you would find in local organizations that provide a mix of classroom and hands-on career training/supports for disconnected youth such as YearUp and YouthBuild, two local organizations that have been so successful that they have scaled nationally (YouthBuild has also expanded internationally including into South Africa).
