The Walk brings together survivors of suicide, their friends and supporters from towns all over Eastern Massachusetts to raise much needed funds for prevention, education and advocacy.
Attendees are families, children and grandchildren who come to honor the memory of their loved ones lost to suicide.
It’s a difficult day for many and we hope to bring some hope and healing to the survivors.
A recent article in The Washington Post reported that about 20 percent of American adults suffer some kind of mental illness each year.
As the leading national non-profit exclusively dedicated to understanding and preventing suicide, AFSP works collaboratively with other organizations across the nation to advocate for better mental health research and treatments; support for families who have suffered a loss to suicide; and to reduce the stigma surrounding mental illness and suicide.
For people whose lives have not been touched by suicide, it’s a world that you cannot imagine or understand.
It’s a devastating loss, unlike any other death.
Families are filled with questions, guilt and “what if’s” and continue to seek |
answers as to why their loved one died by suicide.
Suicide is a national health problem that takes an enormous toll on families, friends, co-workers, schools and the entire community.
In this country, every 15 minutes someone dies by suicide.
In 2011, 553 Massachusetts residents died by suicide.
Nationally, 38,900 people died by suicide.
Imagine all the seats at Fenway Park filled with people, and in one year, they have all died.
Proceeds from Walks will benefit communities in Eastern Massachusetts.
The Boston Chapter provides educational programming for high school and college students, teachers and staff to learn the signs of depression.
Additionally, we provide survivor support to families who have lost a loved one to suicide.
AFSP also works to advocate and educate leaders in Massachusetts to continue funding and support for returning veterans and their families.
