While groundhogs can’t actually determine whether or not we will have an early spring, Groundhog Day is a fun tradition that offers us time to reflect on the changing season.

Drumlin Farm’s own groundhog, Ms. G, was declared the Official State Groundhog by then-Governor Deval Patrick on July 31, 2014. He signed the proposed bill submitted by Wellesley’s Hunnewell Elementary School students, enacting it into law.

Join us to watch Ms. G as she wakes from her winter hibernation and “predicts” whether or not spring will come early this year.

The live groundhog forecast starts at 10:00am, followed by winter activities such as meeting resident wildlife, exploring wilderness trails, family-friendly groundhog crafts, and learning how to identify animal tracks in the snow.

Visitors will also learn how New England wildlife survives the winter and how the changing climate impacts their habitat.

This event is included with admission (free for Mass Audubon members, $9 adults and teens; $6 seniors, children 2-12 for nonmembers)

From the north and south: Take Rt I-95 north or south to exit 26 (Rt 20, Weston/Waltham). Follow signs for Rt 20 east. At the second traffic light, take a left and follow signs for Rt 117. At the next traffic light, take a left onto Rt 117 west. Follow Rt 117 west for 4.5 miles and the sanctuary is on the left.

From the east and west: Take Rt 2 east or west to Rt 126 (Walden Pond, Framingham). Turn onto Rt 126 south (Walden Pond) and follow for 2.5 miles to the intersection of Rt 126 and Rt 117. Take a left onto Rt 117 east and the sanctuary is one mile ahead on the right.

By public transportation: Take the MBTA commuter rail to Lincoln Station. Walk south one block on Lincoln Road. Cross Codman Road and continue south on Lincoln Rd to the intersection with Rt 117. Cross Rt 117, turn left and enter Drumlin Farm through the wall onto the grass path.

Great Excuse to Get Outside

On a 30-something-degree February day with traces of snow still covering the ground, it can be easy to want to go somewhere indoors. This even at Drumlin Farm was the perfect excuse to get outside though. Going in and out of the barns and the Farm Center Building made it easy to enjoy the outdoors, warm up and then go out again. Also the event was well planned with a second showing of the groundhog so all children were able to see it, and an adorable groundhog kids craft. We've been to Drumlin Farm for a few events but this was my favorite yet.
