Sign up for a ten minute slot between 10am and 4 pm to sit for Carol as she free-hand cuts a likeness in paper of your profile! These graceful portraits were popular with sailors as mementos of their loved ones left at home.
While captains and officers could afford to take hand painted miniatures of their wives and children to sea, sailors brought the more affordable paper silhouette along with them.
Sign up in advance to ensure your time slot. Sittings are ten minutes long for each silhouette cut. For example, if you wish to have three children sit for portraits, please allow for three time slots or 30 minutes.
If the individual is not available to sit in person, silhouettes can be created from photos. If using photos, take close-up clear profile views. Bring along several photos of each subject showing the right side of the face.
Call 617-426-1812 x146 or email museumlearning@ussconstitutionmuseum.org to sign up for you slot. Carol will be available from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm.
A portion of the proceeds go to support education programs at the USS Constitution Museum.

Silhouette Portrait by Carol Lebeaux
We took my 2-year-old daughter for Carol Lebeaux to cut her silhouette at the USS Constitution Museum on Veteran's Day 2011. We made an appointment so that we could be first. Each 'appointment' is for 10 minutes. It maybe took 15 minutes for the silhouette and 5 minutes to finish and mount (we had three cut/mounted). Carol has a small portable DVD player set up so that the kids have something to watch while they have to sit still. She shows Winnie the Pooh.
Trained as a portrait painter, Carol does a quick sketch of the child before she hand cuts the sihouette out of black paper. If you want multiple copies, she cuts them all at the same time. We had three done, and Carol said that she prefers to cut two at a time. There are minor difference between the three silhouettes, and I have a favorite and a least favorite (one has a slightly blunted nose).
The first silhouette is $33, each additional is $12, and it was $5 each to mount on a 5x7 mat (good quality). You could also have the silhouette framed for an extra $35-40.
Carol was a delight. She didn't really interact with my daughter (maybe because she was being shy), but Carol kept the parents entertained! She has a wonderful vivacious spark.RELATED LINKS | ↑ top |
