A unique exhibit of “history-inspired” trees provides the backdrop for a month of holiday programming at the Andover Historical Society. “Tree Time at the Andover Historical Society” is a collection of decorated Christmas trees, each inspired by a part of the “Andover Top 40 Exhibit” from the Society’s collections.

The trees are decorated by individuals, groups, and businesses from the Andover community including Andover Fire Rescue, Andover Sister Town Association, Memorial Hall Library, Angela McBrien and her son Duncan McBrien, as well as Doug Mitchell, Board President of the Andover Historical Society.

A wide array of historical artifacts will be on display including a Fire Bucket, a Plan of 1692, an Andover High School Varsity Letter, a Mustache Cup, and even a Hair Wreath. All of these pieces are currently on display as part of the Top 40 exhibit.

The trees will be on display throughout the month of December, Tuesday through Saturday from 10am-4pm. Admission is $8 per person and $5 for members, seniors, and children under the age of 12. Visit the Andover Historical Society this December and join the thousands that have enjoyed this festive holiday tradition in past years.

The Hair Wreath is a must-see piece in the exhibit that has been the inspiration for one of the trees in the event. The Wreath is made of real human hair made by Nancy Sherman and Betsey May Ellis in 1860, using the hair of 125 relatives, friends, handmaids and even the family horse. Historical Society President Doug Mitchell will decorate a tree inspired by this unique piece.

Ford’s Coffee Shop Menu is a part of Top 40 Exhibit. The shop was a friendly and inviting hangout for people going to work and students getting out of school. It was located on 14 Main Street in Andover. The menu was signed by owner Tom Koravos who ran the shop with his wife Stella. The coffee shop was in business from 1954-1994.

An Andover High School Varsity Letter dating from 1950 to 1959 is another inspiration piece. At a time when high school only lasted 3 years, varsity student-athletes would receive their letters during their 3rd year on a team.

This varsity letter is recognition for the ones who had proven that they were a veteran and valued member of the team. The recipients of this letter earned it through hard work and dedication. Memorial Hall Library will decorate a tree inspired by the blue and gold varsity letter.
