Renowned children's author Kay Winters visits Old South Meeting House-Where the Boston Tea Party Began- to promote her new picture book on the Boston Tea Party. In Colonial Voices: Hear them Speak, Winters introduces the events of December 16, 1773, through the lives and beliefs of common colonists. Her book has received star reviews from Booklist and the School Library Journal.

A former teacher and author of such acclaimed titles as 'Voices of Ancient Egypt' and 'The Teeny Tiny Ghost,' Winters chose the colonial period, in particular the day of the Boston Tea Party, because she felt it was a fascinating story that children could understand. 'The colonial period is fascinating,' she says, 'because there were such commanding characters at that time...And, they took such risks to stand up for what they believed. Our lives as we know them today were shaped back then by actions like the Boston Tea Party.'

As the start of the American Revolution, the Boston Tea Party is an iconic event that exemplifies the political points of view of average citizens. The shoemaker disagrees with the tea tax, but must not talk politics for risk of losing customers. The milliner worries less about the tiny fee, concerned more about the king's protection against Boston's rabble-rousing mobs! And, Ethan, the book's central character, is an orphan and errand boy who spreads word of the meeting to take place at the Meeting House.

The book launch for Colonial Voices: Hear them Speak takes place in the Old South Meeting House Museum Shop during the Meeting House's celebration of Harborfest. Winters will be on hand to sign copies on Friday, July 4 from 10 am to 1pm. A reenactment of the historic tea tax debate depicted in the book takes place at 11 am the same day. The book will be available for purchase in the Museum Shop.
