A costume corner encourages kids to sit for a 'portrait' (parents are encouraged to bring a camera!) choosing from among props seen in period paintings of children on display nearby, or striking a pose of their own devising.
The new gallery reflects the mission of Old Sturbridge Village as a place that invites all ages to discover the meaning, pleasure, relevance, and inspiration of exploring history.
Each activity, whether it is re-enacting the chores of an early household or browsing the spice rack at the country store, builds on children's learning in many areas, including geography, history, arithmetic, and reading, to draw them into a child's life in an earlier era.
At two Discovery Centers located in the Kidstory galleries, boxed activities on various themes invite children and their parents to pull up a chair and work and play together. A broad selection of books likewise invites quiet play and a deeper understanding of the Village story. Younger children are offered many farm and animal toys and a chance to discover who lives in the barn (hint: there may be an unexpected resident or two!).
