The campus includes an air-conditioned building, indoor pool, and two large play yards with climbing structures, outdoor equipment and sprinklers. Our program focuses on activities that promote cooperative problem solving and self-confidence through individual and group challenges.
Throughout the summer, we use the Tufts University Hamilton Pool (located next to the Eliot-Pearson Children’s School) three mornings and two afternoons each week. In addition to the program staff, we have lifeguards at the pool at all times. Children wear flotation devices provided by their families for recreational swimming. The curriculum will emerge from different in-depth studies: literature exploration, numeric concepts, problem solving, scientific inquiry, music, drama, and art will be integrated into each study. Each three wee-session has a different theme.
We offer two sessions. Session I, from June 21st-July 9th, focuses in the daytime sky and the sky at night. EPCS's beautiful new playground lends itself to exploring the sky with children. Using children's knowledge of clouds, weather, the sun, and the moon, stars and planets, we will explore both factual scientific information as well as fantasy and the arts. Children may explore the use of satellites or study the moon landing. Other interests may include music and songs such as Mozart's 'The Jupiter Symphony' or the Beatles, 'Here Comes the Sun'. Works of art depicting the sky in various states such as Van Gogh's 'Starry night' or children's own renditions of their observations of the sky will be incorporated.
Session II runs from July 12th-July 29th. This session will explore sculpture: art in three dimensions. Using materials such as wood, soap, sand, clay and recyclables, children will have opportunities to express their emotions, develop their fine motor skills and be part of an artistic community. Beginning with what children already know or where they may see sculpture locally, a common vocabulary will evolve within each group. Some children might go to see sculpture on Tuft's campus, such as Jumbo the elephant, works in the Aidekman Arts Center or Tisch Library on campus. Children will be encouraged to try out new materials or techniques and have opportunities to work individually or in small groups. We will call on local experts for their sculpting advice.
