First impression & etiquette expert Janet Parnes, who has lead previous etiquette workshops for children and teens at Dabblers, will use the context of sea voyage to teach skills children show off at their upcoming holiday festivities!
For example, as passengers the children will introduce themselves to each other and adults on board; dinner with a lady who was on the Titanic as a child will serve as a vehicle to table manners and develop conversation skills; and brief mentions about rude passengers will teach skills around being considerate to others.
Posters, role play and Titanic-era props and stories will heighten interest and encourage participation.
The stories, role-play, and turn-of-the century trivia/props, serve to teach the following topics:
• Introducing ourselves and others: posture, eye contact, the handshake, responding, and how to introduce others, including use of proper titles.
• Basic dining skills: when to be seated/start eating, the table setting, napkin and silverware handling, cutting technique, passing plates, etc.
• Being a considerate family member, friend, and classmate: courtesy and cliques; lunchroom etiquette; steering clear of gossip; respecting differing opinions and respecting privacy
The workshop will include a snack, workbook, and gift for each child. Class size is limited to 12 students, so that each child can receive individual attention and support.
