Circle Process: A Comprehensive Seminar for Circle Stewards

Start date: Saturday, April 13, 2013
Start time: 9:00 AM
End time: 3:00 PM

Join us for this intensive workshop to learn the key elements of the “circle process” - a restorative justice technique that empowers groups to increase listening, creatively solve problems and transform conflicts.

Circle stewards lead groups through the exploration, preparation and facilitation of a guided dialogue to first acknowledge harm, and then to generate mutually agreeable problem-solving possibilities.

By participating in this process, participants are able to name their experiences and needs, which then contributes to the generation of plans the parties create for moving forward.

Seminar participants will learn the steps, process and techniques for preparing for a circle, and the rituals and practices that provide safety and clarity for participants.

Circle process begins with an invitation and commitment to participate by all parties and leads to an action plan or plan for moving forward.

Preparation includes the orientation, logistics, purpose and documentation when appropriate.

Effective facilitators have good listening skills and intuition that complements the circle process technique and format.

In addition, stewards assess the possible goals for a circle which may include listening and empathy, conflict transformation, accountability plans and reconciliation.

To ensure both comfort and skill development for circle facilitation, opportunities for role playing and experiential practice will be available, with peer feedback.

The cost for this workshop is $35, including lunch.

Co-sponsored by the Central Association and the Restorative Justice Task Team of the Massachusetts Conference, United Church of Christ; and the Worcester Area Mission Society.
