As early as the 17th century, Bostonians activated the islands in their harbor as quarantine spaces.
Isolated and removed from the bustling city, the islands received sickly residents and immigrants in an effort to contain the spread of disease.
Join the National Park Service & Charles Vidich, author of Germs at Bay: Politics, Public Health, and American Quarantine, to learn about the role the Boston Harbor Islands played in the historic development of quarantine practices throughout the United States.
This program is presented as part of the commemoration of the 25th anniversary of Boston Harbor Islands National Park, and the 50th anniversary of Boston Harbor Islands State Park.
