Contribute to a unique migratory art mural touring May-October 2023 in Amesbury, Groveland, Haverhill, Merrimac, Newbury and West Newbury.

Learn about the importance of native plants to your yard with a 30 minute slide talk followed by an art and planting demonstration led by local artist Jenn Houle.

Leave with potted native seeds to start your own pollinator garden.

No art or garden experience necessary.

Limited to 25 Households.

Adult programming, grades 7+ welcome.

In 2023, this project will generate 20 colossal painted butterfly signs that highlight the importance of native plants that will ‘migrate’ along a route of high visibility public spaces to inspire viewers to plant native within their own communities: a simple yet powerful act that makes an enormous positive environmental impact!

Plant Paint Cross-Pollinate will begin with a slide talk about ecologically beneficial gardening practices, and the importance of native plants to our pollinators.

An art demonstration will follow with tips and guidance on how to paint flowers.

Participants will use acrylic paint to paint native flowers onto provided butterfly signs and plant pots.

Each household will select 1-2 species of native plant seeds, collected by community members, to plant in provided pots and take them home to add to their own garden.

Information on best growing conditions for the plants will be shared to encourage people to select the right plant for the right site.

Plant species include native milkweed, coneflowers, bee balm, goldenrod and asters.

Resources will be shared for participants to learn more about native plant gardening.

When possible, a volunteer from West Newbury Wild and Native will be in attendance to help answer more questions about native gardening.

Plant Paint Cross-Pollinate Project Overview

• In January & February 2023, residents of six Massachusetts communities will create 15 of the butterfly signs at Plant and Paint workshops where participants will plant and keep the seeds of native pollinator-friendly species, collected by local garden clubs, members of West Newbury Wild & Native, and Project Coordinator Jenn Houle.

• The remaining 5 butterfly signs will be painted by Houle, as she renders examples from each of the five lepidopterous families native to Massachusetts, and focusing on the plants that they feed, nest, pupate, and metamorphose on.

The Butterfly Mural Migration will tour from May 2023 - October 2023 throughout Amesbury, Groveland, Haverhill, Merrimac, Newbury and West Newbury on public conservation land, at public libraries, and around local schools.

Signs will aid in raising awareness about native plants, eco-friendly gardening practices and resources available to the host communities.

Seed banking will facilitate annual repetition of this project.
